You don’t have to believe you can do it all. You just have to believe you can take the first step.
I was reading a book recently when I came across an ancient Chinese saying, commonly attributed to Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
It got me thinking about how powerful this simple message is, particularly when we are facing something that feels too hard, too big, too painful or simply too scary.
Whether it’s starting a business, making a difficult decision, changing direction, confronting a challenge or making a personal change, the journey ahead can feel overwhelming.
We question ourselves. We doubt our abilities. We wonder whether we have what it takes to succeed.
And sometimes, we do nothing.
We stand still. Or perhaps we feel as though we’re slipping backwards.
But here’s the thing.
Every journey begins with that first step.
And often, that first step is the hardest of all.
It takes enormous inner strength to make the decision to move forward. It takes courage to commit to that decision. And it takes even more courage to actually DO something about it.
We must never underestimate what it takes to make that first move, particularly when fear, uncertainty and self-doubt are standing in our way.
So where do we start?
We start by believing in ourselves.
By changing that inner conversation from “I can’t do this” to “I CAN do this.”
By reminding ourselves that we have overcome challenges before. That others have faced similar journeys and succeeded. And that we, too, have the ability to learn, adapt and grow.
We don’t need to have all the answers before we begin.
We don’t need to see the entire road ahead.
And we certainly don’t need to know exactly how the journey will unfold.
We just need to believe in ourselves enough to take that first step.
I’ve been there. Haven’t we all?
I’ve had to take that first step many times throughout my life, both professionally and personally.
Has it been hard? Absolutely.
Have there been bumps in the road? Plenty!
Have I doubted myself along the way? Of course I have.
But I still took that first step.
And you know what?
Every experience has helped me learn, develop and grow. Some journeys have taken me in directions I never expected, and not every step has been a forward one.
But even those experiences have taught me something valuable.
I’ve discovered that courage isn’t about having no fear. It’s about finding the strength to move forward despite it.
And I’ve learned that self-belief grows when we give ourselves the opportunity to prove what we’re capable of.
Sometimes we have to take that first step before we truly believe we can.
So, here’s my challenge to you this First Wednesday Wake-Up. ☕
Think about something you’ve been putting off.
Something you want to achieve, change or overcome.
Something that feels too big, too difficult or too frightening right now.
Ask yourself:
What’s really holding me back?
What would I do if I believed I could succeed?
What’s ONE small step I could take TODAY to get started?
Remember, your first step doesn’t have to be a giant leap. It might simply be making a phone call, having a conversation, asking for help, making a decision or writing down a plan.
It’s not about doing everything at once.
It’s about doing something.
And with every step, you build confidence, momentum and belief in yourself.
So, what are you waiting for?
You CAN do this.
You’ve GOT this.
Believe in yourself. Take that first step. And see where your journey takes you.
Because every journey, no matter how long or challenging, begins with a single step.
My final thought…
“Sometimes we have to take that first step before we truly believe we can. Because confidence doesn’t always come before action – sometimes it comes BECAUSE of it.”
Have a great First Wednesday Wake-Up!
